That’s what they told me when they invited me to come play Magic. They even proceeded to show me the collection of decks that they have at their disposal. Cool! Let’s play!

I packed up my old, un-updated decks. These are I put together back before COVID happened, including Prossh and Ayli, Eternal Pilgrim. I figured this group, as eager as they were to have me come along, were ready to rip with some new hotness.

And oh boy, did they have new hotness. The new precons.

Just. Precons.

I felt so dirty. Like that scene in Billy Madison where he’s smashing the kids’ faces in at dodgeball. “When every card in the grip ruins someone’s day” was the perfect description. Toothy, Imaginary Friend and Pir, Imaginative Rascal, even without any shenanigans happening, were still able to wreck the table.

Fortunately, we all still had a lot of fun and hopefully the other players start building some of their own decks. I’ll be sure to bring my own precons next time, though. Just in case.

I managed to lock myself out of this thing and had to go and reset my password the hard way. But hey, we’re back.

This experiment is going swimmingly. So far, it seems that WordPress decides to fail almost daily, but I haven’t figured out why yet. Also, I haven’t really decided what I want to post yet. This falls under the “cosplaying as a sysadmin” group of things.

The biggest issue I’ve been having is documentation, or lack thereof. What ever happened to wikis? Why does everything need to be in Discord or some random forum? Honestly, the easiest way I’ve found to learn and get through this stuff is using Claude. I hate to admit it, but it’s been nice to check my work through it before I start things up.

If I can’t figure out why this instance keeps hanging on my own, I’m gonna throw my log files at Claude and see what it tells me. Wish me luck.

As I was getting this configured, I genuinely thought I broke my Bluesky login. Turns out that whole site is broken. Not my fault. (At least I don’t think so.)

My head is full of words. I think I’m at a point where they need to come out. I used to shitpost on Twitter and it felt great. Bluesky has kind of filled that role, but it isn’t the same. Who even is my audience? Do I need one? I’m guessing I don’t.

Anyway, I’m gonna attempt to put some of my random ideas here.

This website has a dual purpose. First, it’s me learning how to safely self-host a site. There’s a strong possibility that this ends up getting hacked/spammed/DoS’d/etc. Why? Because, as YouTuber Jeff Geerling likes to say, I’m “cosplaying as a sysadmin.”

Second, this is cheaper than therapy. Will I ramble about Star Trek, board games, or whatever other nerdy shit I’m into? Probably. Will I post things that are deep and meaningful? No idea. I guess we’ll find out together.

Either way, the last couple of hours getting this set up was pleasant. That’s good enough for me.
